The Role of Satan
What's the role of Satan? When someone talks about Satan, you get a myriad of opinions. You get everything from fighter of God, to a fantasy in the minds of the religious. So, what is the truth?
Well, when it comes to Satan, I think it has very little to do with the truth. We all know what the Bible says about Satan,1 but what does the word mean? Satan is an English word transliterated from the Hebrew language. It was originally ah-Satan.2 The ha prefix is very important. It shows that it is a definite article used to refer to someone as an adversary, or enemy, and not a title of someone. In fact, a human being is called Satan in the Old Testament of the Bible,3 and so does an Angel of The Lord.4 So, a Satan is not just a super being who fights God, but someone or something referred to as an adversary or enemy. This could be anything.
One of the most painful stories ever told, has to be The Book of Job. To paraphrase, Satan tests Job to try and show God that he wouldn't be faithful or devoted to Him, if his life wasn't so great. So, Satan puts him to the test. To the human mind, it would appear that Satan is a person, but anyone with any form of mysticism knows, this isn't the case. After all, God is spirit.5 Another thing to notice, and is usually overlooked, is God began the conversation. God asks Satan to consider his servant Job. So in essence, God put Job through Satan's tests. You would almost think they were working together . . .
So, you don't have to be a person of faith to understand what or who Satan is. A Satan, is anything that goes against you, usually in the form of lies. You can't go around it, take another path, or go back. You have to go forward, right over Satan. It's get a lot easier, once you know it's role.
