Delusion Series: Maturity

There are so many myths that surround popular talk in the metropolitan United States. You might of heard of them, or been thought of as weird if you didn't subscribe to them. One is the concept of maturity. Most popular definition of maturity is someone who acts "appropriately" according to their circumstances or environment.1 That is not what maturity originally meant. Maturity in it's original form is defined as completeness or perfection. It was used by agriculturists to describe produce as ripe, complete, perfect, ready to be picked.2 Can we really use this word to describe anybody?

I have no idea the full evolution of the word maturity, how it was used towards people, and who were the people who were being described as mature. Did it mean the point in which a young boy leaves his tribe and parents and is allowed to hunt on his own? Did it mean when a young woman or man goes off to college and leaves the comfort of their own family and home? Who knows. I know it is now used to describe those who fall in line with the mindset of Corporate America.3

Maturity means perfection or complete. Nobody is either perfect or complete. We are all broken individuals, who fall short of the prize. Just because someone puts on the suit, says the right words, and seems to do the tasks that are allotted to him or her, does not make that person mature. How many times have we heard of these "leaders" or "executives", cheating on their wives or even living double lives. How many times have we heard the "intellectual elite", having horrible addictions, or being plain sociopaths. No one amounts to the level of what maturity really means. Just because our institutions of higher learning and business market tell us that your supposed to act a certain way, doesn't mean it is correct. If you have problems you are suffering with, and they keep reccuring in your life, it's okay. Your immature and need to grow some more, but hey, so does EVERYONE else. This society has the image of what perfection is . . . . .AND IT'S NOT PERFECT.

God bless,
Ryan

2 Etymology online: mature
3 I can write a full article on that subject. Corporate America are the circumstances that you are supposed to be trained for.
